Johnny Depp loses London libel case involving ex Amber Heard

LONDON 2 November, 2020-Johnny Depp on Monday lost his sensational libel case against a British newspaper that accused him of beating ex-wife Amber Heard.

After an explosive trial that included allegations of everything from adultery to defecation in the pair’s marital bed, London High Court Judge Andrew Nicol delivered his decision following three months of deliberating.

“The claimant has not succeeded in his action for libel,” the judge wrote, saying that The Sun newspaper had shown that its 2018 story under a headline calling Depp a “wife-beater” was “substantially true.”

Nicol said he “reached these conclusions having examined in detail the 14 incidents” that Heard testified about, saying she’d been attacked by her ex-husband.

“It has not been necessary to consider the fairness of the article or the defendants’ ‘malice’ because those are immaterial to the statutory defense of truth,” the judge wrote.

Nicol also didn’t buy Depp’s claim that Heard was a “gold digger,” noting that she donated her $7 million divorce settlement to charity.

“I recognise that there were other elements to the divorce settlement as well, but her donation of the $7 million
to charity is hardly the act one would expect of a gold-digger,” he wrote.

Heard’s US attorney, Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, said the “decision and judgment are not a surprise” to anyone who had followed the trial.

“Very soon, we will be presenting even more voluminous evidence in the US,” she said in a statement of a follow-up trial expected to be heard in Virginia next year.

“We are committed to obtaining justice for Amber Heard in the US court and defending Ms. Heard’s right to free speech.”

A spokesman for The Sun said the paper had “stood up and campaigned for the victims of domestic abuse for over twenty years.”

“Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced and we thank the Judge for his careful consideration and thank Amber Heard for her courage in giving evidence to the court,” the spokesman said in the UK paper.

Depp, the 57-year-old multimillionaire star of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” had sued the paper and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over its April 2018 headline labeling him a “wife-beater” based on Heard’s allegations.

Depp took the stand at trial to claim he was brought up too much of a Southern gentleman to lay a finger on a woman — and instead called the “Aquaman” actress the abusive one, saying she even faked photos to make it look like he injured her when really it was nothing more than a “choreographed hoax” to ruin him.

The actress “came into my life to take from me anything worth taking and then destroy what remained of it,” the actor testified.

The Sun’s star witness was Heard, 34 — who called Depp a boozing, drugged-up “monster,” saying he nearly killed her during their toxic, five-year relationship.

Depp once launched a “three-day ordeal of assaults” on her in a rented home in Australia, she claimed.

He lost his fingertip during the attack — then allegedly wrote her name in pee on the floor and scrawled hateful messages on mirrors using the bloody stump of his finger.

Depp was supposedly jealous over her friendship with co-star Billy Bob Thornton — one of a series of people he accused Heard of having affairs with. Others included actors Leonardo DiCaprio and James Franco and Tesla mogul Elon Musk, the court heard.

Then, just when it seemed the former couple had hit a new low, Depp testified that he dumped Heard after she or a pal defecated in his bed out of vengeance — and snapshots of the offending feces were entered into evidence.

But even with Monday’s ruling, the former Hollywood couple’s battle is far from over.

Depp is still suing Heard for $50 million in Virginia over a Washington Post op-ed she penned about her experience as a victim of domestic violence. While Depp wasn’t named in the piece, he insists it was strongly inferred he was the perpetrator.

She has filed a $100 million countersuit.

NASA says there’s more water than previously thought on the moon

NEW YORK october 26, 2020-There appears to be more water than previously thought on the moon — and the discovery could greatly help fuel deep-space exploration, NASA said Monday.

The water — which would be used for everything from drinking to the extraction of oxygen for astronauts to breath — is possibly trapped in “glass beads’’ about the size of a pencil tip in the moon’s soil, scientists said at a press conference.

“This discovery that water might be distributed across the lunar surface and not limited’’ to ice at the moon’s sunless poles, as the space agency had thought, raises the possibility that it could be “accessible as a human resource,’’ said Paul Hertz, NASA’s astrophysics director.

Enough water was detected in a cubic meter of soil outside the poles to fill a 12-ounce bottle, said Casey Honniball of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

She said it may have come from a combination of hydrogen molecules in the moon’s solar rings and oxygen in its soil.

We think the water is trapped in these glass beads … which protects and preserves them,’’ Honniball said.

“This discovery that water might be distributed across the lunar surface and not limited’’ to the moon’s sunless poles, as the space agency had thought, raises the possibility that it could be “accessible as a human resource,’’ said Paul Hertz, NASA’s astrophysics director.

Enough water was detected in a cubic meter of soil outside the poles to fill a 12-ounce bottle, said Casey Honniball of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

She said it may have come from the combination of hydrogen molecules in the moon’s solar rings with the oxygen in its soil.

“We think the water is trapped in these glass beads … which protects and preserves them,’’ Honniball said.

The discovery was made by a space laboratory above the moon known as SOPHIA, the Sratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, which definitively detected water’s “chemical fingerprint,’’ Hertz said.

A scientist speculated at a NASA press conference in 2009 that there was possibly enough water on the moon to support bases there so man could eventually planet-hop around the galaxy.

In 2018, the agency said there was definitely water — possibly ancient — in the form of ice around the moon’s poles.

Scientists determined the water was ice from the way it reflected light.

They said it formed at the poles because temperatures don’t go above minus 250 degrees there, since sunlight never reaches them, given the only slight tilt of the moon’s axis.

NASA said Monday that scientists still have to determine what form the newly discovered water is in, how much of it exists and whether it can be extracted.

“This is the core part of the question — we really need to understand about the water that’s present,’’ said Jacob Bleacher, head of the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at NASA.

“We need to understand what form it’s in, how much of it there is.

“It’s far easier to travel when you don’t have to carry everything with you for the entire trip,’’ Bleacher said in a nod to how crucial outer-space water supplies would be to widespread planetary travel.

“We know water exists” on the moon. “So finding water that’s easier to reach is really important to us.’’

The agency has said it will send the first woman along with a man to the lunar surface in 2020 to prepare for hopefully putting humans on Mars in the 2030s.

Anti-lockdown demonstrators block off Oxford Street

LONDON 24 October, 2020-Hundreds of anti-lockdown campaigners are marching towards Parliament after bringing Oxford Street to a standstill.

The demonstrators, carrying banners saying “Covid1984” and “Flu d’etat”, chanted “Take your freedom back, take off your masks” as they marched through the West End.

Officers were out in force and the Metropolitan Police later said 10 people have been arrested so far at the Stop the New Normal protest.

“This protest is no longer exempt from the regulations and we are asking demonstrators to leave,” the Met said on Twitter.

Officers were deployed outside Buckingham Palace as large crowds of protesters gathered on the steps of the Queen Victoria memorial opposite the palace gates with banners and placards, calling for “freedom”.

Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, also attended the protest.

Once at Parliament Square, the protesters likely had company in the form of a pantomime cow and a group of chlorinated chickens, who gathered on Saturday to protest against a proposed trade deal between Britain and the US.

Demonstrators also included a Donald Trump impersonator holding a syringe labelled “hormones” as they called for opposition to the lowering of UK food import standards.

”Corridor of misery, despair and crime”: Guardian Angels patrol NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood

NEW YORK October 18, 2020-The Guardian Angels have begun patrolling Chelsea — the third Manhattan neighborhood the crime-prevention group has descended upon this year.

“These are places, if you would have ever suggested years ago they need Guardian Angels, they would have said, ‘You’re out of your mind.’ Well now they do,” said founder Curtis Sliwa.

Sliwa and other volunteers began walking the Chelsea area Sept. 29, not long after police said a grocery store manager was viciously attacked there by a deranged homeless man, ABC 7 reported.

Ramon Acevedo, 64 was opening the 25th Street store July 23 when Oscar Apronti, 27, suddenly swung a hammer at Acevedo’s head, police said.

Sliwa said his volunteers soon learned there were other problems in the neighborhood, including a “corridor of misery, despair, and crime” on 20th and 21st Streets, between 7th and 8th Avenues, where “people are selling drugs, shooting up. . .emotionally disturbed.”

More than 100 hotels in the city have taken in homeless shelter residents this year to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The once-family-friendly Upper West Side was also plagued by an influx of hotel-shelter residents who slept on the street, shot up and defecated in broad daylight, prompting Sliwa’s volunteers to begin patrolling there this summer.

Earlier this week, the Guardian Angels announced its volunteers would also begin canvassing the Upper East Side.

VARESE. 25 settembre 2020-La Svizzera agli svizzeri.

(it.euronews.com)
